How to play
Jul 28 2009, 10:13 PM EDT
The proposed setup is as follows. On the FRIDAY of every other week I will move the action forward some, providing new options and situations. By the following WEDNESDAY I will have responded to each character's choices and informed them of results. For dice rolling I strongly recommend Invisible Castle. (ie. http://invisiblecastle.com/) The game will go slowly, but is dependent on player's keeness. I am very open to suggestions about how to do things better, resources and as mentioned above, setting suggestions. Thanks, ChromeKnight The aim is some collaborative storytelling in what seems to be in interesting world, though this is a wiki so feel free to edit the setting page to push it in the direction of coherency and originality. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. 6. Some more on how to play
Aug 3 2009, 2:11 AM EDT
To be honest, I jumped into this never having done it before. Hence I've been a little vague about what happens. (I'm still keen though!)Now it's starting I'm getting a better idea of how I'd like to work this. Here's how I see it. Friday. I collate the posts and responses and rolls into the story on the main page and reveal some more. Sometime between that Friday and Wednesday playing characters can narrate some action that they are doing. Wednesday following, I'll respond with a request for rolls against particular cliches that either match what the character is attempting (if it needs) or to perform an action that is the logical or narrative consequence of what has been narrated. After that Wednesday, Players respond by rolling (preferably using some verifiable source such as Invisible Castle) or declare that they don't want to follow the narrative consequence and want to do something else (be very specific!!). By which time a fortnight has likely passed and a new Friday update point is approaching. Before the Friday I'll narrate the effects of player actions in the play thread and players can suggest modifications to make the responses their own. Then... Friday. I collate the posts and responses and rolls into the story on the main page and reveal some more narrative. And we start again! How does this sound to everyone? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. This sounds fine to me; I am used to a certain amountof turnaround time in this sort of game if it involves mutual editing or dice-rolling. Even in diceless ones there is a certain amount of time needed.I think you'll find that it will get extemely slow if dice-rolling becomes a major, or multi-person occurrence, simply because the action gets very granular as people have to respond to altering situations. I'll try to get onto Invisible Castle again; it was either down or choked with traffic the last couple of times I tried. In the event that I cannot find a decent third party die roller, I am quite content with the GM making the rolls. Do you find this valuable? |

8. Invisible Castle test rolls.

As an update, I finally managed to get registered on Invisible Castle.I gather that I am to post the URL of rolls in the posting thread, like this: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2193714/ If this is the way it's done, I am ready to roll, as it were... Do you find this valuable? |

10. Character sketch for approval

Ok, here goes the first rough idea for my character. As mentioned, I'm compeltely inexperienced, so the scope of cliches might be sligthly off (too broad compared to ohers?). Thoughts and suggestions welcome. Captain Rodion Black, Aeronaut (4), Gentleman Pirate (3), Swashbuckling (3) Basically he is a young sky-faring human, with enough inheritance (social and financial) to think of himself as a gentleman explorer, but enough debts and discordance with societal norms (he calls it free spirit) to be tagged as a pirate in some circles. Otherwise he's well meaning and disasterously romantic. Not yet sure about the name, the actual values for the cliches can change in accordance with GM (i.e. if there will be very little flying around, I can give the Aeronaut a lesser value and use a dice somewhere else). The Aeronaut cliche is supposed to cover knowledge of navigation, chartreading, skies and operating an airship. Gentleman Pirate is a more"social" part of the character; about his connections (high and low), charisma, perhaps some skills, expected from a gentleman (dueling, appreciation of fine arts etc.) and a "pirate" (running from law). Swashbuckling is pretty self-explanatory; swordfighting, swinging from swingable objactes (you've seen it all). Again, if anyone finds the stuff too broad (some of you have much better defined cliches), I can try adding another cliche and/or changing some, just say so. As for the ship; I can describe it briefly (just the appearance and stuff found aboard) and when it would be operated, GM would simply assign target numbers to stuff such as individual manoeuvres, predicting weather, operating/fixing machinery and artilery etc. as the game goes on. Just my view of the matter. Do you find this valuable? |

How do I add my rolls to the existing Arcane Arclight campaign (like rotwang and lodestone - both on the same page)? I just typed Arcane Arclight into the appropriate window, but that just created a new page with the same name. Thanks Do you find this valuable? |

I just typed Arcane Arclight into the appropriate window, but that just created a new page with the same name.I really don't know. It doesn't look like you've spelt it differently.I had a poke around, but there is no extra documentation. As it stands, I can see your roll, (3d6 for 9, http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2195887/) so it doesn't seem to be a problem. For everyone generally: I think for rolls, I'll only need the number at the end, no need to paste the 'http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/' bit. And it goes without saying that I expect numbers in sequence, no skipping numbers. Thanks. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Captain Rodion Black, Aeronaut (4), Gentleman Pirate (3), Swashbuckling (3)Since you asked for opinions, I'll give mine. Your cliche definitions seem fine. I don't know many cliches about Aeronauts. Rocketeer does not fit. The Gentleman Pirate makes me think of Captain Blood, but rarely are characters actual cliches. You could have Captain Blood (3)... Gentleman Pirate is probably best. Likewise an Errol Flin Swashbuckler (3) or Dashing Swashbuckler (3) could be substituted for Swashbuckling. If you are a more group oriented then Musketeer (3) would make a good choice. Personally, all of this may be over thinking your straight forward approach. Do you find this valuable? |

"Sounds good. I'll add it now. I'd suggest adding something to swashbuckling, since with that as a cliche all you can do is swashbuckle. You could have Swashbucking Sky-Pirate and you'd have points to spend elsewhere, Or if Swashbuckling is important enough to be a cliche of it's own, think about how he got to be swashbuckling, how you like to buckle your swash and whether or not he likes to be swashbuckling (which I assume he does) The answers may give you things like trainee Swashbuckler or reluctant Swashbuckler or Witty Heart-stealing swashbuckler... just ideas. Hope they help. Do you find this valuable? |

I'm terribly tempted to have Aeronaut and Swashbuckling merged into Swahsbuckling Sky-Pirate ... (is that what you meant?) to cover both; his experience commanding a sky ship and his sea ... erm, sky legs, swinging the ropes, not fearing heights etc. In this case , I'd just change him into something like Swashbuckling Sky-Dog, Gentleman Pirate and Witty Swordsman (Dueller). Again, if that's not along the lines of what you thought, please let me know. As liberating as I find the whole Risus cliche system, I want to make sure I get the scope right. :)Thanks for your help. I get the "internal server error". If that simplifies matters in any way, I personally have nothing against mr. Chrome rolling the dice. Especially becuase he could declare results and interpret them in a single post, cutting on the clutter. This site http://www.random.org/ has cool (and de facto random) generators, though I'm still looking for a way to have the results saved/mailed (I guess it's in the premium - payable option). Otherwise I've registered on this page http://dicelog.com/dice and it seems to work ok (if there will be need for another utility). Do you find this valuable? |

Ok, I found a really simple option; http://rpgp.org/dice/? you just click the "Dice Room" and join an existing room (or create one) with your nick. You can try joining "The Test Session1", where you should be able to see a couple of test rolls I've done. The cool thing is, there is no registering required.
